I recently took a trip to visit some old friends. I was so excited as I hadn’t seen them in years. We went out to breakfast to catch up. We all went around the table and I was particularly interested in the way my friend Jenn was talking about her journey with her body.
Jenn is tall, has blonde hair and blue eyes. She’s always been a stunning woman. She used to be an actress and a model. She now has 3 kids under the age of 10, a husband and a full-time job. Not to mention juggling soccer, track, dance and many other extra-curricular activities for the kids.
Over the last few months, she has also put a lot of energy and effort into caring for her body and working out. She’s changed her family’s eating habits and wakes up every morning at 5 AM to go to a body Boot Camp.
I acknowledged the changes she was making and how great her body looked. I was met with self-depreciating comments like: “I’m not there yet”, “I wish I looked better”, “I feel great but I still don’t look that good”
I was shocked.
A couple of days later I saw her at a party. I stood there as I watched person after person compliment her the same way I did and time and time again she replied with “not good enough” comments.
I was shocked again and dismayed at the way she was treating her body. This beautiful body that had given birth to 3 children and keeps up with her demanding schedule.
I thought: “Wow, she is being so mean to her body”. I mean really, if your best friend treated you that way, would you still be friends with them?
A few questions occurred to me from this situation. And no, it’s not about what your body looks like.
Who are you being with your body?
What if you unraveled the magic that hides beneath the veil of disdain you have for your body?
What gifts and capacities are you not allowing yourself to receive from your body?
What if you really, truly allowed yourself to be present with your body without judging
him/her or yourself?
Be present with the gifts your body can be and embrace what he/she can be in the world and for you!
What if you took a moment now and acknowledged everything your body contributes to your life and living?
Are you ready to end the fight with your body?
